REVIEWS

Jamie:
I realy liked jamies concept, and thaught it worked well with the teenagers trapped in the scary asylum. The description was detailed and the stroy line interesting.

Alex: I liked the way it was a realistic concept anmd that it could happen to a family, it was not too far fetched. The locations and sircumstances were naturalistic and i think it would work well as a film.

PINS AND NEEDLES PITCH

The Opening sequence is of a polieceman telling the father of a victim about the situation and crime scenes. The two men are old friends, partners from their last unit, brought together by the attack of the mans daughter. The officer fills the father in about the attacks. As he describes this, flashbacks and images appear on the screen, following the narrative voice over. There are images of the evil couple and the vicar, of how they became like this and performing their sick rituals on victims. These are shot flashing cuts from many angles, making it fast paced and exiting. Rapid jump cuts. The two men are at a crime scene or at the hospital. As the two men talk the flashbacks reflect what they are describing. There is a transition between past tense and the present when the father changes his complexion and we get a sense of his new found determination to end this. The music cuts out so only his words are heard, while the screen is black and the title appears.

This Sequence fills us in about what has got to be dealt with, so there is tension and excitement from the start. After this title sequence there is a flashback to before this had happened and the fathers daughter is about to be married. The attacks then happen and we are in the present and the father goes about trying to find the wife and vicar. There are many leads and locations he discovers while doing this and there are plenty of twists and complications throughout. He succeeds in hunting down the Vicar, but then the wife used acupuncture on the officer he worked with, and taunts him with the remedy. He finally obtains this and the wife disappears and we are left not knowing if she is dead or moved onto another town.

Visual style:
Jumpy camera techniques with rapid jump cuts throughout. The steadiness, speed and angle of the camera changes with the location, so when focussed on the two men in the hospital there are smooth slow shots, but the flashbacks will have fast rapid cuts, often hand held and short shots, lots of close ups and medium shots, so the focus of the shots fill the screen, i.e. the bodies of the victims, cuts of the rituals, the vicars face, the fire and destruction of their church etc, and flashes of crucifixes will be shown throughout, but very fast and subliminal.

Location:
The two men are talking at either a crime scene (a small grim dark dingy room or flat with crime scene props) or a hospital.
The flashbacks take place in quite a few locations:
Many church shots for the victims and the original church fire. (A set can be used when there are close ups of the dead family and friends)
Dark small rooms for the several victim crime scenes and rituals, about 3 will be shown including the mans daughter (The rituals taking place are shown and then afterwards when the police have discovered the scene)
The woods and a liar for the evil couple and vicar to keep their wax castings, and live to plot their next attacks.
A place to shown the corpse of the dead husband (edge of the woods?)

Characters:
The officer is tall, strong and quite young, 30’s roughly. He is straight forward and trying not to be shocked by these horrific incidents. He is factual and brief but we can tell he is affectionate for the father too, although he does his best to hide it

The father (Mark Coldstone) is older, with experience in his eyes. He has similar characteristics, though he is unshaven and greying slightly. He has a sense of dominance although he he is run down and riddled with grief. It is evident that the two men are familiar with each other, but they are professional, serious and experienced and do not show this much. The father starts off very worn down and beaten which is evidently out of character for him. This emphasized his visible change near the end of their conversation. “a look of determination and rage replaces the grief in his eyes”
He is standing more upright and a close up of his hands show his knuckles turn white. We see him staring at the officers handgun.

The Vicar’s face is never seen fully, it is always concealed by one of the scary wax casting masks, but we sometimes notice the cancerous red skin underneath. He wears a long black vicars uniform with a black misshapen hat, long white gloves and a large gothic crucifix on his chest. He always carries a blood red bible.

The couple:
Again we on only catch glimpses of the couples deformed faced but their hands are exposed, red and misshapen. The wife wears a dirty holey wedding dress with a vial that covers her face, one of her casted wax masks underneath. The man is dressed in a tuxedo, scruffy and dirty, the white shirt underneath is covered in flecks of blood. His face is also covered by a wax mask, but it looks inhuman and abnormal.

Props:
The crime scene:
Two bodies are side by side in a dark room. Only the candles which surround them illuminate them. Needles cover their skin, and only their blinking eyes can move. The vicar stands above them reading from his bible. Wax is poured on the couple to preserve their expressions and worn by the evil couple. They stand to attention either side of the vicar as he performs his ritual. The only time the masks are taken off are when the sick couple kiss according to the vicars sermon.

PINS AND NEEDLES SCRIPT

At the empty crime scene or hospital
Images flash during and in-between the conversation of what is being described

Officer
“It started in a church, many years ago now. There was a newly married couple in a horrific accident, that drove them into insanity and caused deformity. The church had a fire, a fire which killed all the couple’s friends and family, only they and a vicar survived, well, their bodies were never found.”

Father
“Go on…”

Officer
“Since then these incidences have happened all over the place to newly married couples.

Father
“What was the evidence at the crime scenes?”

Officer
“Well we knew it was the same people every time; there were strange things at all the crime scenes…”

Father
“Like what?”

Officer(with some difficulty)
Needles…pins and needles, all over the victims bodies, the couple used acupuncture to paralyse the victims. They still have full conciseness.

(There is a tense pause, the father fiddles with his ring, trying to disguise his disgust)

Officer (Continues cautiously)
“We also found wax…”

Father (confused)
“wax?”

Officer
(continues, difficulty hiding his bewilderment)
“Yes, casts had been made of the victims faces, we believe they wear these masks when they commit their ritual, candles are found around the bodies at the crime scenes. They believe in couples being together for eternity, it is their way of enforcing this.
Father (with difficulty)
“Ok, is there anything else?”

Officer
“The words “I Do” are carved into their skin”

The Tone changes

Father (hoarsely)
“Who else is involved?”

“Officer
We believe there is another individual. Vicars have been disappearing recently, and we believe he is behind it, so he can marry the couples. He takes his Christian beliefs to another level. The marital vows are carved onto the victims bodies. He marries couples and then used this couple to ensure his faith is upheld.”

(He pauses… Then Forcing himself)
The victims will never recover their comas. It is probable that he married your daughter, I am sorry.

Another pause, he looks up at the father

Father
Well what can I do?

Officer
Well the body of the husband has been discovered dead, we believe the wife and the vicar have paired up in some way.

(father is seen thinking, a harsh look in his eyes for the first time)

Officer (noticing)
I advise you strongly not to get involved, this is a very volatile and dangerous situation, and the Vicar has a reputation of violence

(The fether wipes his eyes, and a look of determination and rage replaces the grief in his eyes.)
(The father looks up, the screen goes bank, music cuts out)

Father
“Leave it with me, I was always an atheist”

A Flash and the screen goes black, the title of the film is on the screen.

Pins and Needles

A happy couple were getting married in a church, when a terrible fire occurres, killing all their family and friends, only the couple and the vicar survive, but with gruesome deforming burns. Many strange newly married couple crime scenes have happened since, both with the same strange incidents. The victims are all paralyzed for eternity by being pierced with needles, and wax is pored over their faces from the candles which surround them to preserve their expressions of horror. The words “I Do” are carved into the victims with a cake knife. These murders happened often over the course of a year, police are still baffled, when suddenly the body of the male killer is found dead, his deformed face seen for the first time without his mask. It seems total madness had gripped the couple, and the wife had brutally murdered her killing partner, pairing up with the vicar to continue their sick rituals together. She is an acupuncture freak, and uses pins and needles to torture and paralyse her victims. She lives in an underground lair in the woods with a little hut instructed by the vicar to paralyze all the couples he marries, where the walls are covered in the victims face masks, which they ware when committing their rituals. The vicar uses these masks to change his identity, allowing him to marry the couples and uphold his strange beliefs.
The sequence will show past images about the couple and what happened to them. With a voice over a conversation between the victims father and a police officer, the two talk like friends. Images and clips show up on the screen with the titles as the officer describes the crime scenes and what happens. The victim’s father is a Special Forces police who has just moved to this area when his daughter and newly married husband turn up paralyzed just a few days after the wedding in their new location. The two men used to be partners and have been united through coincidence and the situation.

Photoshop poster for Elephant, a realistic reality like film about school shootings. I used the transparent tool to get the opaque images of the piano, which was relevent in the film. I think the image balences quite well.
